UTRGV Wins Consolation Championship

NICEVILLE, FLA. — Junior guard Nick Dixon scored a game-high 25 points, including back-to-back three-point baskets in a key stretch helping the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley hold off Saint Francis Brooklyn, 71-61, in the consolation championship of the Destin Realty Emerald Coast Classic Saturday at Raider Arena.

Clinging to a 58-55 lead, Dixon’s two treys gave UTRGV a 64-55 lead with 4:14 left in the game.

Dixon’s heroics came after there had been nine ties and three lead changes in the second half.

Sophomore guard Lew Stallworth added 20 points, including 12 in the first half.for UTRGV which moved to 2-5.

Sophomore guard Glenn Sanabria led Saint Francis Brooklyn (1-4) with 16 points. Senior guard Yonus Hopkinson collected 13 points for the Terriers, while junior swingman Gunnar Olafsson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Terriers limited UTRGV to 27.3 percent shooting in the first half en route to a 29-26 halftime lead.
