Northern Arizona escapes Southern in overtime

NICEVILLE, FLA. — Northern Arizona scored the first nine points of overtime and never looked back en route to earning a 70-63 overtime victory past Southern in the third round of the Emerald Coast Classic Friday afternoon.

Reserve guard Kris Yanku scored a season-high 18 points for the Lumberjacks who snapped a two-game losing streak while improving to 2-4.

A layup from Southern’s Tre Lynch with seven seconds left in regulation tied the game at 57-57 sending it into overtime.

Lynch came off the bench to score 13 points for the Jaguars who suffered their fourth straight loss while slipping to 1-5.

Ako Kaluna scored Northern Arizona’s last four points of regulation on back-to-back tip ins.

Kaluna finished with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Northern Arizona shot 45.1 percent from the floor, making 23 of 51 shots.
Southern shot 41.1 percent from the floor, but made only two of seven shots in overtime.

Senior guard Quinton Upshur added 13 points for the Lumberjacks.

Guard Trelun Banks paced Southern with 14 points.

Northern Arizona outrebounded Southern, 34-31.
